VLESS Reality vs Hysteria2: which VPN protocol to use in 2026

5 min readРусская версия

Most services hand you two protocols in one subscription: VLESS Reality and Hysteria2. The second one is not a spare copy. They run on different transports, and each covers a case where the other struggles.

VLESS Reality (TCP)

Runs over TCP. To anything watching the connection, it looks like ordinary HTTPS traffic to a normal website. It works on most networks and keeps latency low. This is the default profile.

Hysteria2 (UDP/QUIC)

Runs over UDP, using the QUIC protocol. Its advantage shows on lossy, congested links — mobile data, a crowded public hotspot: it recovers from packet loss faster than a TCP-based tunnel.

Which one to use

  • Home or office Wi-Fi, wired connection → VLESS Reality.
  • Mobile data, public Wi-Fi, a connection that keeps dropping → try Hysteria2.
  • Not sure → stay on VLESS and switch only if you start seeing drops.
The real advantage is having both profiles in one subscription. If one transport does badly on a particular network, you switch to the other in a tap, without changing services.
