Windows 7 and 8.1 in 2026: What Still Works — Browsers, Telegram, Games and VPN
Windows 7 stopped getting updates in January 2020 and Windows 8.1 in January 2023. Computers running them still switch on every morning: at home, at a parent's place, at the cottage, in the accounts office. If you have one, here is where things stand in October 2026: what still works, what no longer does and how to keep an old machine from letting you down. The dates come from the developers' own pages.
| Program | Where it stands | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox ESR 115 | Gets security fixes until March 2027; Mozilla has extended that date several times | The best browser choice right now |
| Chrome and Edge | Stopped at version 109 in early 2023, no more fixes | Switch to Firefox ESR |
| Telegram Desktop | Current versions support Windows 7 and later, per the developer's page | Update as usual |
| Steam | No support for Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 since 1 January 2024 | Needs Windows 10 or later |
| Happ, V2RayTun | Do not start; need Windows 10 | Our app or v2rayN |
| ProxysVPN (ours) | A separate build for 64-bit Windows 7 SP1, 8 and 8.1 | Windows 7 guide, 8 and 8.1 guide |
The browser: the one thing to change today
Chrome and Edge on Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 stopped at version 109; Google and Microsoft announced it in advance, at the end of 2022. A browser without fixes is the widest open door in an old system: malicious pages and fake downloads both come through it. More and more sites also say “your browser is out of date” and work only some of the time.
The way out is Firefox ESR 115, the extended support release. Mozilla's release calendar gives it security fixes on Windows 7-8.1 until March 2027. Download it only from Mozilla's official page (pick Firefox Extended Support Release in the list). On first start Firefox offers to bring over your bookmarks and passwords from Chrome.
Certificate errors and sites that will not open
- The clock first. If the battery on the motherboard is dead, the date resets at every start, and secure sites answer with a certificate error. Set the right date and time zone.
- Then the browser. Firefox keeps its own store of root certificates and updates it with the browser, so in Firefox ESR sites open where the old Chrome already stumbles.
- Then the updates. Install the last updates Windows Update still offers; on Windows 7 these include the KB3125574 rollup and KB3140245 for current security protocols.
Telegram, video and games
Telegram Desktop still installs and updates: the developer's page says current versions support Windows 7 and later. Watch video in Firefox ESR; in the frozen Chrome 109 sites work worse over time. Steam, on the other hand, has not supported Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 since 1 January 2024: Valve said its client needs a current built-in browser and features of Windows 10.
VPN on Windows 7 and 8.1
The cores of current VPN clients, Xray and sing-box, are built with the Go compiler, which since version 1.21 produces programs only for Windows 10 and later. That is why Happ, V2RayTun and a current v2rayN either do not start on an old system or stop with failed to run core. Two routes still work: a separate build of our app, ProxysVPN, for 64-bit Windows 7 SP1, 8 and 8.1, and v2rayN with a compatible build of the Xray core.
- Windows 7 — the Windows 7 guide: our app, update KB2533623 for the installer, and v2rayN for 32-bit.
- Windows 8 and 8.1 — the Windows 8 and 8.1 guide.
How to make an old computer last
- Browser: Firefox ESR; remove the other browsers or stop opening them.
- Antivirus with current definitions: check in its settings that they updated this week.
- Programs only from the developers' official sites. On an old system a “cracked” installer is more dangerous than on a new one.
- Back up photos and documents to an external drive or the cloud: an old hard drive can fail without warning.
- If the computer is slow, replacing the hard drive with an SSD speeds it up the most.
When it is time to move
There are three signals: Firefox ESR stops getting fixes (watch March 2027), your bank's site stops opening, or a program you need asks for Windows 10. If the computer can run Windows 10 or 11, move to it. If not, move to Linux: Ubuntu and Debian are free to install, and our app exists for them too, on the same download page. What still installs on an old phone, tablet or Mac is collected in VPN on old devices.
Questions
Is it safe to use the internet on Windows 7 in 2026?
Not fully: the system has had no fixes since January 2020. A browser that still gets updates (Firefox ESR), an antivirus with current definitions and programs only from official sites lower the risk noticeably.
Which browser is best for Windows 7 in 2026?
Firefox ESR 115: among the major browsers it is the only one still getting security fixes on Windows 7-8.1, until March 2027 by Mozilla's calendar. Chrome and Edge stopped at version 109.
Does Telegram work on Windows 7?
Yes: the developer's page says current versions of Telegram Desktop support Windows 7 and later.
Does Steam work on Windows 7 and 8.1?
No: Valve ended support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 on 1 January 2024.
Which VPN works on Windows 7 and 8.1?
A separate build of our ProxysVPN app for 64-bit and v2rayN with the Xray-win7 core for 64 and 32 bits. Step by step: the Windows 7 guide and the Windows 8 and 8.1 guide.
What about Windows XP or Vista?
Neither our app nor v2rayN runs there: the minimum is Windows 7 SP1.
