VPN on Windows 7 in 2026: a 5-Minute Setup for 64-bit and 32-bit

8 min readРусская версия

Most current VPN apps do not start on Windows 7: the desktop versions of Happ and V2RayTun need Windows 10 or later. For 64-bit Windows 7 SP1, 8 and 8.1 there is a separate build of our app, ProxysVPN: one installer, nothing to assemble by hand. On a 32-bit system the working route is v2rayN with the Xray core over VLESS. The steps for both follow.

ProxysVPN is our service, and the app is ours too. The other apps in the comparison are described from public information as of the date this article was updated; whatever we have not checked ourselves is marked as such.

Why regular VPN apps fail on Windows 7

The Xray core inside almost every VLESS client is built with the Go compiler, and Go dropped Windows 7 and 8 with version 1.21. So even when an app's window opens, the connection dies with failed to run core or 0xc0000005. The Project X developers still publish a separate win7 build of the core with every release; our Windows 7 build runs on it, and so does the last v2rayN that supports Windows 7.

Step 0. 64-bit or 32-bit?

Right-click Computer → Properties. The “System type” line says 64-bit or 32-bit operating system. On 64-bit, use our app; on 32-bit, use v2rayN.

Our app: Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 (64-bit)

Download the installer from the download page: the line “Windows 7, 8 or 8.1?” under the buttons. The file is large, about 180 MB, because the window engine is inside; nothing else needs installing. The app itself is free; what you pay for is the subscription: $1.50 per device per month, taken from your balance, with nothing charged to your card automatically. Top-ups start at $5. An account opened on the Russian site is priced in roubles instead: an account keeps the currency it was opened in, whatever card tops it up.

  1. 1Run the installer. If Windows warns about an unknown publisher, choose “Run” (or “More info” → “Run anyway”): the build is not signed with a developer certificate yet. Allow administrator rights.
  2. 2If the installer refuses and asks for update KB2533623, install the cumulative rollup KB3125574, which contains it, through Windows Update or from the Microsoft Update Catalog, restart the computer and run the installer again.
  3. 3Get a sign-in code: in your dashboard, open the device card and press “Code for the app”. The eight-character code is valid for 10 minutes and works once. No account yet? Signing up takes a minute with an email address; Telegram is not needed.
  4. 4Open ProxysVPN, choose “Enter a code from the website”, type the code and press “Connect”. Signing in with the subscription link works too: “Paste the link from the clipboard”.
  5. 5Press the big button on the main screen: the app picks a country by itself. To choose your own, open “Countries”.
How this build differs from the regular one: it has no WataFast protocol of ours and no Windows notifications, and it does not update itself — take each new version from the download page and install it over the old one. It was tested in virtual machines with the Windows 7 SP1 and 8.1 kernels; not yet on real PCs or on Windows 8 without “.1”. If something goes wrong, write to support or install v2rayN instead.

v2rayN on 64-bit Windows 7

The fallback if our app does not suit you. Download two archives: the client v2rayN 7.16.9 SelfContained (the last version that supports Windows 7; nothing else to install) and the core Xray-win7-64.zip (the link always points to the latest release).

  1. 1Unpack the client archive into a folder such as C:\v2rayN; no installation is needed.
  2. 2Unpack the contents of Xray-win7-64.zip into C:\v2rayN\bin\xray, replacing the files: the bundled core will not start on Windows 7.
  3. 3Run v2rayN.exe. If the interface opens in Chinese, the seventh item of the top menu switches the language to English.

v2rayN on 32-bit Windows 7

You need three files: the .NET 6.0 Desktop Runtime (on Microsoft's page take the Windows x86 installer), the client v2rayN 6.43 (the last branch that runs on 32-bit Windows 7) and the core Xray-win7-32.zip.

  1. 1Install the .NET 6.0 Desktop Runtime (x86).
  2. 2Unpack v2rayN.zip, for example into C:\v2rayN.
  3. 3Unpack the contents of Xray-win7-32.zip into C:\v2rayN\bin\xray (create the folder if it is missing), replacing the files.
  4. 4Run v2rayN.exe.

Adding the subscription to v2rayN

The subscription link is on the device card in your dashboard. What a subscription link is and why the client re-reads it is explained in the subscription link guide.

  1. 1In v2rayN open the subscription group settings in the top menu, add an entry, paste the link into the URL field, save, then update the subscription from the same menu.
  2. 2Select a server and press Enter. Locations that run only over Hysteria2 will not appear: v2rayN cannot use that protocol, and the rest of the list is there.
  3. 3Right-click the v2rayN icon in the tray next to the clock and turn on “Set system proxy”.
  4. 4Check that your IP address has changed to the server's. The country a lookup service shows can differ from the location you picked; geolocation databases disagree, and it is not a leak.
failed to run core or 0xc0000005 means the regular core is in place. Download the archive marked win7 for your bitness and replace the files in bin\xray again. SmartScreen or antivirus warnings are the usual reaction to programs from outside the Microsoft Store; v2rayN and Xray are open source, so download them only from the official GitHub pages linked here.

If it does not connect

  • Check the bitness: a 64-bit client will not start on a 32-bit system, and our app exists only for 64-bit.
  • Install update KB3140245 and the root certificate updates: without them Windows 7 cannot use current TLS, and the connection breaks during the handshake.
  • Add the app to your firewall and antivirus exceptions: on older systems they are the usual reason a network adapter cannot be created.
  • Internet gone completely once it is on — see VPN connected but no internet.

Questions

Does this work on Windows 8 and 8.1?

Yes. Our separate build covers 64-bit Windows 7 SP1, 8 and 8.1; it was tested on 8.1, not yet on 8 without “.1”. v2rayN works there too. Step by step: VPN on Windows 8 and 8.1. On Windows 10 and 11 use the regular version from the download page.

What else still works on Windows 7 in 2026?

Browsers, Telegram, Steam and more: Windows 7 and 8.1 in 2026 lists what still gets updates and what does not.

What about Windows XP or Vista?

No: the minimum is Windows 7 SP1.

How much memory does it need?

v2rayN takes 30-60 MB. Our app is heavier because its window runs on a built-in browser engine; on a very weak computer v2rayN is the lighter choice.

Can I use it on a work computer?

Technically yes, but company policies often forbid installing third-party network software. Ask your administrator first.
