Best VPN for Android in 2026: check it yourself in 5 minutes

7 min readРусская версия

In short: there is no VPN that is right for everyone: carrier networks and regional blocks differ. The right one for you is the one that works on your network, does not sell your data and does not switch off when the screen goes dark. Below are seven five-minute checks. They fit any app, ours included, and for each we wrote down honestly how ProxysVPN does.

ProxysVPN is our service, and the app is ours too. The other apps in the comparison are described from public information as of the date this article was updated; whatever we have not checked ourselves is marked as such.

Seven checks in five minutes

  1. 1Does it work on your network. Turn the VPN on and open a site that does not load without it: first on Wi-Fi, then on mobile data. Since August 2023 Russian carriers have blocked OpenVPN and WireGuard by protocol: the key icon is lit, yet pages do not load. VLESS Reality, XHTTP and Hysteria2 are in use now, but some networks cut them too. So judge by the result on your own network, not by the protocol name.
  2. 2What the app collects. On the app's Google Play page open the “Data safety” section. Bad signs for a VPN are device identifiers or location under “Data shared”, browsing history under “Data collected”, and a line saying the data cannot be deleted. What the popular free VPNs say about themselves is in free VPNs from Google Play: what they collect.
  3. 3What permissions it asks for. A VPN app needs the internet, the VPN itself and notifications. It does not need contacts, SMS, the microphone or precise location. Where to look: Settings → Apps → the app → Permissions.
  4. 4Whether it leaks. With the VPN on, check your address, DNS and WebRTC; what a DNS leak is and what a WebRTC test really shows explain how. The address should belong to the VPN's country, and the DNS should not be your carrier's.
  5. 5Whether it stays up in the background. Connect, turn the screen off for 15 minutes and see if the key icon is still in the status bar. If it vanished, the phone's software is putting the app to sleep. What to tap on your brand is in VPN turns off on Android.
  6. 6Whether Russian apps work directly. Banks, Gosuslugi and marketplaces often refuse a foreign address. A good app can send them outside the VPN. Even so, they may still notice the VPN on the phone; why is explained in why VK, MAX and banks see your VPN.
  7. 7Who owns it and what it lives on. A service should have a website, terms, support and a clear price. Free unlimited traffic with no ads is a reason to ask who pays for it; free VPN and bandwidth resale goes into that.
Neither ratings nor download counts replace the background check and the check on your own network. An app with ten million reviews on Google Play can still pass device identifiers to ad networks, and you only see that in “Data safety”.

What no check can tell you

  • Speed in the evening. It differs between daytime and peak hours and depends on your network and the distance to the server. Test at the time you actually use the internet.
  • What happens tomorrow. Blocks change. An app that works today can stop tomorrow, so keep a spare.
  • Anonymity. A VPN hides traffic from your carrier, not from sites where you are signed in. More in why a VPN does not make you anonymous.

How to install ProxysVPN

  1. 1Install ProxysVPN from Google Play or from the APK file: both buttons are on our apps page, in the Android card.
  2. 2Get a sign-in code: in your dashboard, open the device card and press “Code for the app”. The eight-character code is valid for 10 minutes and works once. No account yet? Signing up takes a minute with an email address; Telegram is not needed.
  3. 3Open the app, choose sign-in by code and type the code. Android asks for permission to set up a VPN connection: tap “OK”.

The app itself is free; what you pay for is the subscription: $1.50 per device per month, taken from your balance, with nothing charged to your card automatically. Top-ups start at $5. An account opened on the Russian site is priced in roubles instead: an account keeps the currency it was opened in, whatever card tops it up. Frequently asked questions

Which VPN is best for Android in 2026?

Honestly, no single one is best for everyone: different protocols work on different networks. Pick the one that passes the seven checks above on your network. Our app is one you can check this way during the trial.

Can I trust the ratings on Google Play?

Ratings say how convenient an app is, not what it does with your data. Look at the “Data safety” section, the developer and the permissions.

Do I need a paid VPN?

A free one lives on ads, data or limits. If you cannot explain in a minute what it lives on, you are paying with something nobody told you about.

Can I install ProxysVPN without Google Play?

Yes: the APK file is on our apps page, in the Android card. If the phone has no Google Play at all, as with some Huawei and Honor models, see VPN on Huawei and Honor without Google Play.

Which Android version do I need?

Android 8.0 or later for our app.
