App Won’t Open on an Old MacBook: 5 Checks Before You Write to Support

In short: most often there is one cause: the wrong file, or a macOS older than the app needs. Go through five points in order; it takes a couple of minutes.

1. The macOS version

Apple menu → “About This Mac”: the window shows the name and version of macOS (as Apple shows it). On macOS 11 Big Sur you need the separate file: the “Mac on macOS 11 Big Sur?” line on the download page. On macOS 12 or newer, the regular or the Intel image. On 10.15 and older there is no build: write to support.

2. The processor: Intel or Apple silicon

In the same “About This Mac” window an Intel Mac has a “Processor” line and an Apple silicon Mac has a “Chip” line (Apple). The file must match the processor: the table.

3. The open confirmation

At the first launch macOS asks whether to open an app downloaded from the internet. Click “Open”. The Big Sur file is notarized by Apple, so no extra steps are needed.

4. The file downloaded in full

If the DMG does not open or breaks off, download it again from the download page and drag ProxysVPN to “Applications”. Delete the old copy from “Applications” first.

5. The sign-in code

The app opened but will not let you in? The eight-character code is valid for 10 minutes and works once. Take a new one in the dashboard: the device card → “Code for the app”.
